Tough Sectional Loss Sidelines Triton
BREMEN – The Triton boys tennis team saw its season come to a close Wednesday evening in first-round sectional play.
The Trojans dropped a tough 3-2 final to familiar foe John Glenn in the opening match of the Bremen Sectional.
The match came down to the No. 2 singles court.
Calvin Kretchmer of Glenn outlasted Gavin Eads 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3) for the clinching point in the matchup of Northern State Conference foes. Eads trailed 5-0 in the second set before staging an amazing rally to force a third set. Eads then saw Kretchmer rally from a 5-1 deficit in the third set to earn the win.
The Falcons advance to play Bremen Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in one semifinal. Plymouth, which has won 17 straight sectional titles, faces LaVille Thursday in the other semifinal.
The title match is slated for Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Culver Academies Regional on Oct. 7 to play the winner of the Warsaw Sectional. The Warsaw Sectional finale is set for Thursday with Warsaw versus Whitko.
Jared Fisher and Mace Eads collected wins for Triton Wednesday. Fisher topped Hunter Jaworski 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Eads defeated Andrew Sheffer 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles action.
Glenn, which beat Triton 3-2 on Sept. 23, swept the doubles courts. The team of Evan Rhodes and Andrew McDonald of the Falcons stopped Austin Sellers and Alex Eib 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 play. The Glenn duo of Alec Runyan and Kevin Auman defeated Spencer Glingle and Ben Waggoner 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
The Falcons also won at No. 2 singles and both doubles positions when the teams met in their league contest eight days ago.
