Wawasee Sports Wrap – Sept. 15
In the final test before the state tournament begins, Wawasee got one final round of competition at Maxwelton Golf Club Monday afternoon in a 185-205 win over visiting Fairfield.
The Lady Warriors conclude the season 17-1 overall after the Fairfield win, which had Mikala Mawhorter and Elizabeth Jackson post 44s to lead the team. Seldom used Madison Beaman offered a 45 and Courtney McDaniel posted a 52 in her final home match.
Regina Raber led the field with a 41 to pace Fairfield, which had Alayna Fritchley turn in a 47, Makayla Bontrager a 56 and Chelsie Neibert a 61.
Wawasee, which tied NorthWood for the Northern Lakes Conference title with a one-stroke win at the NLC Championships Saturday, will next compete in the Warsaw Girls Golf Sectional Saturday morning.
Concordia Happy At Home
An offensive outburst in the first half was more than enough for Fort Wayne Concordia to defend its home turf in girls soccer Monday night. The Lady Cadets scored three goals out of the gate to overwhelm Wawasee in an eventual 5-0 final.
The loss was the sixth shutout against Wawasee as the team falls to 1-8 overall.
“We got off to a very slow start,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “Concordia beat us to the ball and controlled action in the first half. Much better effort from Wawasee in the second half that generated opportunities, but we were unable to score.”
The JV game went to Concordia, which scored the lone goal of the contest in the 55th minute of a 1-0 final score.
“We have a young group that learned what it takes to play in bad conditions today,” offered Heinisch. The players are working hard, we just need more experience.”
Wawasee will host DeKalb Thursday.
Westview Overwhelms Wawasee
Westview and Wawasee have had some epic volleyball battles in the series, but Monday night was not one of them. The host Westview side crushed Wawasee 25-15, 25-14, 25-19.
Wawasee coach Jeff Phillips noted Aly Anderson’s defensive effort was superior, leading the team with 24 digs. Alli Ousley added 17 assists and seven digs while Seaquinn Bright hammered home five kills.
The loss leaves Wawasee at 8-8 overall.
The Westview JV also earned a convincing win, 25-10 25-20 over the visiting Lady Warriors. Kayleigh Rhodes had five digs and three kills to lead Wawasee, which is 7-5 on the season.
Wawasee will take on Concord Thursday night.
