Wawasee Sports Wrap – Sept. 11
Wawasee needed someone to step forward in its quest for a boys soccer win in the Northern Lakes Conference. That person was Carlos Camargo Thursday night.
Camargo took a corner kick from Brock O’Haver in the 30th minute and buried what would be the winner in a 1-0 final over visiting NorthWood.
The strike was Camargo’s fourth of the season, tying him for the team lead, and helps the Warriors to 1-0-1 overall in the NLC and 3-2-3 overall.
Korey Knafel was solid in net, saving seven shots for his third clean slate of the season.
“The guys played as a team with a positive mindset. Great to see them coming together,” stated Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp.
The junior varsity match ended in a nil-nil draw.
Wawasee will travel to Elkhart Memorial Saturday morning for an NLC matchup.
Ladies Tune Up With Win
Two days ahead of the huge Northern Lakes Conference tournament, the Wawasee girls golf team sharpened up with a 174-205 win against Fremont at Maxwelton Golf Club.
Wawasee was very steady in its scoring, using a 42 from Mikala Mawhorter, 43 from Elizabeth Jackson, 44 from Aubrey Schmeltz and 45 from Courtney McDaniel.
Fremont’s Raigan Porath led her club with a 41 and Katie Sydwell chipped in a 48. Riley Seidel added a 55 and Tonya Cessna turned in a 61.
Wawasee moved to 16-1 on the season and will look forward to playing in its backyard at the NLC, which will be held at South Shore Golf Club on the south side of Syracuse. NorthWood won the regular season title Tuesday, handing Wawasee its only loss of the year.
Ridge Shuts Out Warriors
Wawasee continued to find trouble in Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis play, losing its fourth match of the year in four tries, this time 5-0 at Northridge.
Wawasee skipper Vince Rhodes mixed up his lineup, but wasn’t able to find the right combination.
Todd Hauser moved from one doubles to one singles but came up short to Landon Arnold 6-3, 6-0. Nate Perek fell to Ted Field at two singles 6-0, 6-3 and Cal Heinisch, who had played one singles all season, lost to Simon Grevengoed 6-2, 6-4 at three singles.
Jake Hutchinson and Nate Haines paired together for the first time since the first week of the season but lost to Sam Hoover and Austin Schmidt 3-6, 6-1, 2-6 at one doubles. Brayton Fretz and Leonard Kline could not figure out the two doubles team of James Dugle and Aadarish Patel 6-1, 6-3.
Northridge won all five of the JV courts.
Wawasee (3-9, 0-4 NLC) will look to reverse its NLC fortunes with it travels to Warsaw Tuesday.
Raiders Complete The Sweep
After posting shutouts in the varsity and JV football games, the Northridge Raiders completed the tri-fecta with a shutout in the freshman game against Wawasee, winning 36-0 in Syracuse.
Wawasee’s offense could not get it going against the potent Northridge iron curtain. Will Geer threw for 75 yards, 50 of which went to Zac Linnemeier.
The Warriors (2-1) will head to Concord next Thursday.
