County BZA Approves Plan For Crematorium
A former furniture store on the north edge of Warsaw will be converted into a funeral home/crematorium. During its regular monthly meeting Tuesday in Warsaw, Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a petition for an exception to allow the former Warsaw Furniture Outlet on SR 15, north of Levi Lee Road, to be converted by Cremation Services of Kosciusko County.
An exception was required since the building is an existing structure on property zoned commercial.
In other business, the BZA approved a petition by A & J Krouse Investments to expand a non-conforming marina by constructing a new storage facility on property zoned agricultural on EMS B1 Lane in Tippecanoe Township at Barbee Lake.
Other agenda items included:
• A petition by John Karagiannis to allow a tract of land on CR 1100N at Turkey Creek Road in Turkey Creek Township to be deeded for tax purposes only was tabled for 30 days. Matt Sandy, assistant planning director for the county, said the board wants to consult with the county attorney to make sure the petition can be approved legally according to existing ordinances.
• A petition by Jerry Smith to allow sheds to remain as placed, as well as a pool and residential fence, on SR 13, north of EMS B8 Lane in Tippecanoe Township, was denied. Several remonstrators objected to the petition.
• William Jaggers’ petition for a variance to allow a pool to remain 4 feet from the property line on CR 1250N at the intersection with CR 825E in Turkey Creek Township was approved for him only, and if the property is sold the pool must be relocated.
• Linda and Michael Lehman’s petition to allow two residences to remain on one tract (allowing living quarters in an existing pole barn to be rented out) on SR 13, north of CR 800N in Turkey Creek Township, was approved as long as Linda Lehman is an owner of the property.
• Daniel Peterson was granted a variance to allow construction of an open carport 13 feet from the west right of way, not 10 feet as requested, on Roy Drive at the intersection with CR 850S in Seward Township.
• Michael Mettham’s petition for parking in a commercial district on Main Street at the intersection with Ward Lane in North Webster was tabled for 30 days to allow him time to present a more detailed parking plan. A previous parking arrangement meant customers had to cut across fire station property to get to his business to park.
• A petition by Advantage Real Estate Sales and Development to allow a new residence to be built after an old one is torn down on CR 1000N, east of Turkey Creek Road in Turkey Creek Township, was tabled for 30 days to give the contractor time to put a detailed site plan together.
• Two petitions by Jon and Rita Gage to build an oversized accessory building and a residence addition were tabled for 30 days to allow the Gages to present “more realistic plans.”
• Gene Baumgartner was granted a variance to construct a residence 5 feet from the west side line on Waco Drive, east of SR 13 in Turkey Creek Township.
