Wawasee Sports Wrap – Aug. 25
It’s been a lopsided series in now the second year of boys soccer between Wawasee and Hamilton. Monday night, the Warriors again brought the wood in scoring 11 unanswered goals in a 11-0 final over the host Marines.
Wawasee, which put up 10 goals in the win a year ago in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, didn’t let up in its first win this year. Ricky Camargo scored a hat trick and assisted on two other goals. Carlos Camargo and Luis Camargo combined for three goals and three assists. Caleb Glon, Austin Shrack, Alex Doll, Harvey Lopez and Addison Dumford all found the back of the net while Lopez, Kyle Weideman and David Yankosky all assisted on goals.
Korey Knafel made two stops to record his first shutout of the season.
Wawasee (1-1-1) will receive a much stiffer challenge from a different Northeast Corner Conference opponent when 1-A No. 7 West Noble looks to defend its home turf Thursday evening.
Ladies Sweep Lakers
After a .500 tournament show in Elwood over the weekend, Wawasee went right back at it on the road Monday night in Lagrange. Needing just three games, the Lady Warriors had to work but closed out Lakeland 25-21, 25-17, 25-20.
Lakeland kept it close, forcing Wawasee into some defensive work. On the ball was Aly Anderson, who led the Lady Warriors with 32 digs and also provided two aces on the offensive side.
Alli Ousley had 23 assists and three blocks whiles Addison Ayres chipped in seven digs, six kills and two aces. Paige Hlutke also had six kills for Wawasee, which moves to 3-4 on the year.
“(We are) making the needed adjustments to prepare for the tough Northern Lakes Conference season,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips.
The JV Warriors (4-2) also had some tough sledding but got the straight, 25-16, 25-23, over the Lakers.
Taylor Mock had a nice night, leading Wawasee with five digs, four kills, four assists and three aces. Amy Beer added six assists and four digs while Skylar Janda ripped a game-high seven aces.
