Ken Jennings Golf Benefit Saturday
A record number of golfers are expected Saturday for the Ninth Annual Ken Jennings Putt for PSP golf benefit at South Shore Golf Club in Syracuse.
The outing is designed to raise money for research into the causes and a possible cure for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and since 2005 has raised nearly $50,000.
PSP is a rare neurological disease that claimed the life of Ken Jennings, a former owner of the Frog Tavern, in 2009. In May of this year, Cheryl Kroemer, a resident of Lake Wawasee, also died of the disease after a courageous 6-year battle.
The Jennings family first organized the Putt for PSP event in 2005, and the Kroemer family joined in last year.
A total of 24 teams are registered to participate, with golfers teeing off at 8 a.m. The day will include lunch and awards at the golf course and conclude with a cruise around Lake Wawasee on the famous Lillypad II, departing from the Frog Tavern at 3 p.m.
Golfers will also compete for an array of prizes and gifts certificates including hole-in-one prizes of $10,000, and use of a new car from the Tom Kelley Automotive Group.
A popular feature of the outing is the golf ball drop where participants buy as many golf balls as they want for $5 each. The balls are dropped onto a target from the Syracuse Fire Department’s aerial truck and the owner of the ball closest to the bull’s eye wins half the pot.
In another contest, one lucky golfer will have the chance to sink a 60-foot putt for a prize of $5,000.
Even non-participants in the outing can purchase golf balls for the ball drop. To participate, stop by the golf course any time Saturday morning or contact Jack Jennings at [email protected] or Jim Kroemer at [email protected].
