Special Blood Drive In Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind. — An American Red Cross blood drive will be held on Saturday, July 26, in honor of 3-year-old Wyatt Schmaltz. Wyatt is battling Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that starts in young nerve cells.
“Wyatt is strong and he’s a hero to many of us for fighting so hard,” said Wyatt’s father, Joseph Schmaltz. “Wyatt has received several blood transfusions and will continue to receive them.”
Every day, patients across the U.S. need an average of 44,000 units of blood. That’s about 17 million donations — or nearly 23 million blood products — transfused to 5 million patients a year.
Wyatt’s family hopes to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood donors for patients like Wyatt and many others.
“We want anyone and everyone who can to come out to donate,” said Joseph Schmaltz.
Donate blood in honor of Wyatt Schmaltz from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Life Church, 900 E. State St., in Huntington.
Donors are asked to please call 1-800-RED CROSS or go to redcrossblood.org to schedule a blood donation appointment.
