Lee Rocker, Tony Funk in Kokomo
The Stray Cats were formed in 1979 in New York. The trio’s early days were spent toiling in the underground clubs of NYC. Cutting their teeth at CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City and the other joints of the day, as well as the bars and clubs of their native Long Island. People quickly took note of the band’s extraordinary energy, power and talents.
The Stray Cats sounded and looked like nothing else at the time or even since then. Lee Rocker’s giant upright bass provided the iconic image that defined the look of the band. The upright bass drove and propelled the music with with a power and pulse that couldn’t be stopped.
Setzer’s guitar and Slim Jim’s powerful drumming had a sound and feel that would not be denied. In 1980 the cats moved to London and started recording albums and landing hits worldwide. “Rock This Town”, “Stray Cat Strut”, “Sexy and 17”, “Runaway Boys”, and “Bring It Back Again” still ring out and are staples of classic rock radio.
The Stray Cats took rockabilly and American roots music to a new place. They added their own unique spin to it and emerged as one of the most important bands of the generation. The rest is rock and roll history…
10 million records sold. Twenty-three gold and platinum awards. MTV music video pioneers. Rockabilly hall of fame. The original trio have parted ways and all three cats are enjoying solo careers. The Stray Cat, Lee Rocker is playing all the hits, all the songs. With all the passion that’s always been the trademark style, sound and legend of The Stray Cats.
