Wawasee Sports Wrap – May 20
After a hot start to the dual season, Wawasee has fallen back of late in Northern Lakes Conference play. A 157 shot Tuesday at McCormick Creek left Wawasee 11 shots back of NorthWood (146) and four short of Plymouth (153) in the triangular.
“We played well,” began Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We put ourselves in good shape to get a win over Plymouth, but finished weakly. We would have liked to at least split tonight so it was a bit disappointing. But there were some positives.”
All three teams turned in low rounds, but NorthWood managed its home course the best. Logan Kauffman led the field with a 35 to pace the Panthers, with teammates Alec Dutkowski and Brayden Glaser one back at 36. Hayden Klotz added a 39 for NorthWood.
Plymouth had two 37s from Reis Yoder and Nate Kolter while Ben Schenk was one back at 38 and Zach Craft fired a 41.
Wawasee had just two scoring under 40 in Cal Heinisch’s even-par 36 and Jeffrey Moore’s 37, where he rallied after a double bogey after one to shoot one-under the rest of the round. Tristen Atwood turned in a 41 and Mason Germonprez carded a 43.
“We are putting ourselves in good position, we just have to close out our rounds,” offered Coverstone.
Plymouth won the JV triangular with a 179, followed by NorthWood at 184 and Wawasee at 195. Cameron Adams led Wawasee’s scores with a 46.
Wawasee, which started 9-1 on the season, now sits at 10-4 overall and are 2-3 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The Warriors will play again Thursday at Bent Oak against host Concord and Elkhart Memorial, which concludes the regular season round robin.
Warriors Rally For JV Win
A seesaw affair Tuesday night had Wawasee walk off winners of the JV baseball game against Fairfield, 7-6, played at Wawasee.
After Fairfield had scored two runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh, Wawasee plated the winner in the bottom half to move to 12-5 on the season.
Rieder Hunley was the winning pitcher, striking out five and had help at the plate from Caleb Dingeldein, who was 3-for-3 with a double and Stephon Miller, who doubled twice.
Wawasee plays again Wednesday night at Concord.
