Wawasee Pieces Together Win Against Whitko
SYRACUSE – Just two days from play opening at the Warsaw Girls Tennis Sectional, Wawasee and Whitko met to decide the final regular season meeting for the two clubs. After the tennis balls quit bouncing, the Lady Warriors had claimed a 4-1 win against the visiting Lady Wildcats.
Wawasee, which will meet Columbia City Wednesday in the opening round of the sectional, will need a win to see if it can beat Whitko twice in a week. The Lady Wildcats drew the bye and will meet either Wawasee or Columbia City Thursday in the semis, opposite Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley on the south side of the bracket.
As for Monday, a shuffled Wawasee lineup still made waves. Not having Katy Ashpole and Chelsea Carolus available as both were involved in an off-campus academic matter, the Wawasee singles were still reliable. Jada Antonides filled in for Ashpole at one singles and bested Mikayla Findley one and two in Antonides’ first one singles match of the season.
Brooke Fick won her first-ever varsity match at three singles in Carolus’ stead, beating Aurelia Slusher one and one. Marte Tverra also won her first-ever varsity singles match at two singles, beating Erin Murphy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The two doubles team of Jaclyn Miller and Charity Parker picked up a win, rallying from a 6-4 loss to Deleney Keirn and Morgan Keirn in the first set to post a 6-3, 6-4 triumph to close out the Wawasee success.
Whitko’s pairing of Abby Marshall and Candice Zwick collected a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory in the one doubles grid against Addison Ayres and Jazlyn Gehlhausen.
There were just two junior varsity games played, with Paige Miller and Katie Kuhn both registering 8-3 wins against Bianca Baier.
