Warsaw Highlights Track All-NLC
WARSAW – It was a very big night for both the Warsaw boys and girls track teams at the Northern Lakes Conference track championships.
Warsaw won seven girls event championships Tuesday night en route to a 176-point finish in the team standings, the ninth consecutive team title for the Lady Tigers. The Warsaw boys won its fourth straight title by crushing the field with 188 points on the strength of 11 event titles.
In recognizing the accomplishments, Warsaw had 17 boys and 11 girls make the All-NLC lists.
For the Warsaw boys, automatic All-NLC nods were given to Ismael Calderon, Nicholas Bergen, Daniel Messenger and Tyler Houvener for the 4×800 relay; Ellis Coon for the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs; Stephan Kolbe for the high jump; Rashaan Jackson for the long jump; Andrew Scheidt for the discus; Seth Fouts for the shot put; Chad Goon, Ryan Goon, Landon Perry and Gabe Furnivall for the 4×400 relay; Michael Miller for the 100-meter dash; Tanner Balazs and Tristan McClone for the 4×100 relay with Furnivall and Miller. Furnivall was also recognized for the 400-meter dash.
Storm Stapleton was listed as an All-NLC Honorable Mention selection.
For the Warsaw girls, automatic All-NLC nods were given to Hannah Dawson, Brooke Rhodes, Allison Miller and Anna Craig for the 4×800 relay; Claire Hickerson for the pole vault; Ann Harvout, Audrey Rich, Mariah Harter and Samantha Alexander for the 4×100 relay. Alexander was also recognized for the long jump; Rich the 200-meter dash; Harvout the 100-meter dash; and Miller the 3,200-meter run.
Jackie Ferguson was also listed All-NLC while Nicole Eckert was listed as an All-NLC Honorable Mention selection.
Wawasee’s boys team finished second to Warsaw in the team standings and had three athletes listed. Clayton Cook made the list for wins in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the 200-meter dash. JJ Gilmer was also listed as All-NLC and Zach Cockrill All-NLC Honorable Mention selection.
Wawasee’s girls team finished sixth in the standings and had just one representative make the list in Catherine Yankosky, who received All-NLC Honorable Mention honors.
Wrapping up the remainder of the boys NLC grid, Concord, which finished last in the standings, still had three athletes make the Honorable Mention list while Goshen and Plymouth had two, and one each for Northridge, Elkhart Memorial and NorthWood.
On the girl’s side, Plymouth finished second in the standings and had seven athletes listed. Goshen had four, Memorial and Concord had two each and Northridge had one. NorthWood did not have a female track athlete make the list.
Warsaw’s Matt Thacker and Scott Erba were named the NLC Boys and Girls Coach of the Year.
