Wawasee Sports Wrap – April 22
Golfers Open Dual Season With Win
Wawasee conquered the Cobblestone Golf Course Tuesday afternoon by shooting a 164 to beat host Central Noble’s 183 in the boys golf dual season opener.
Wawasee’s top three all were at 41 or better, with Tristen Atwood firing a 38 to lead all golfers and Jeffrey Moore and Cal Heinisch both posting 41’s. Mason Germonprez added a 44 to round out the scoring cards, while Rasmus Rich tallied a 48 as the fifth score.
The Cougars had Austin Rose lead the charge with a 41 and Brett Gallmeier add a 44.
“I thought we played pretty well,” began Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “Jeffrey had a little trouble putting but still shot 41 and Cal kept his good play going with a 41. It was cold and windy. We need to improve our short games.”
Kyle Weideman and Dominik Sanderson both turned in 44’s to lead the Wawasee JV to a 185-253 win against Central Noble.
Wawasee will next take part in the Whitko Invite this Saturday.
Concord Shuts Out Tennis
The Concord girls tennis team had Wawasee’s number Tuesday afternoon in Dunlap. That number was zero as the home team nearly swept Wawasee on every court in a 5-0 win.
Wawasee won just three games on all five of its varsity courts as Alexa Klopfenstein at two singles and the one doubles team of Holyn Eldridge and Shannon Purcell pitched shutouts at love and love against Jada Antonides and the combo of Erin Wiktorowski and Aubrey Schmeltz.
Jenny Landis and Alana Brubaker both won 6-1, 6-0 on the one and three singles courts against Katy Ashpole and Chelsea Carolus while Mandy Meserve and Michaela Searer won 6-1, 6-1 versus Jazlyn Gehlhausen and Natalie Fritz on the two doubles stage.
Kayla Hershberger picked up the only JV court win for Wawasee, beating Kaitlyn Kronemeyer 8-0 on the singles grid.
Wawasee (1-2, 0-2 NLC) will play again Thursday at home against Manchester.
