Warsaw Nets Fifth-Place Finish
WARSAW – The powerful Penn girls tennis team claimed top spots at three positions Saturday en route to earning the team title of the Tiger Invitational.
The No. 21 Kingsmen totaled 24 points to win the seven-team event held at WCHS.
Host Warsaw scored nine points to finish in fifth place in the final team standings for the annual tournament.
The host Tigers, who opened their season with a 3-2 win over Columbia City on Thursday, had four fourth-place finishes on the day.
Senior Sarah Boyle earned a fourth-place finish at No. 1 singles for Warsaw. Rachel Alexander also placed fourth at No. 3 singles for the Tigers.
The Warsaw No. 1 doubles duo of Abbi Baum and Camille Kerlin placed fourth. The No. 2 doubles team of Anna Hall and Athena Schlitt also placed fourth for the hosts.
Senior Jacqueline Sasso placed seventh at No. 2 singles for coach Rick Orban’s team.
Penn won the tournament with 24 points, while No. 8 Munster was runner-up with 18. No. 27 Fishers was third with 17 points, followed by Elkhart Memorial (14), Warsaw (9), Merrillville (7) and South Bend Adams (6).
Earning individual titles for champion Penn were Haylei Snelson at No. 1 singles, along with Cameron Moore and Amanda Ahmed at No. 1 doubles and Lauren McCarthy and Emma Moon at No. 2 doubles.
Krystel Grubb of Elkhart Memorial won the No. 2 singles title and Megan Moriarty of Fishers claimed the top spot at No. 3 singles.
Warsaw (1-0) hosts Plymouth in the Northern Lakes Conference opener Tuesday. The Tigers then play at NLC foe Northridge on Wednesday and host Fairfield on Thursday.
