Wawasee Sports Wrap – April 17
Doty’s Boys Crush Columbia City
Wawasee, after a swinging gate loss Monday night at East Noble, maintained its strong offense to open the 2014 season with a 16-9 varsity baseball win at Columbia City.
The Warriors, after opening with a four-run first inning, had to rally when the Eagles took an 8-7 lead after three innings. Wawasee then responded with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to separate from the hosts. Wawasee (3-1) pounded out 16 hits in the contest and have now scored 53 runs in its first four games.
Nate Hare was a monster at the plate for the Warriors, going five-for-five with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Nate Prescott added four hits and three runs scored and Kurtis Liston scored a pair of runs and swiped three bases.
Jordan Currie earned his first victory of the season, working 4.2 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five.
The Warriors will find out just how good it is Friday afternoon when it hosts defending 3-A state champion Norwell at 5 p.m.
The Wawasee ‘C’ team held pat in a 9-7 victory over Goshen at Wawasee. Noted offensive stars for the Warriors (2-0-1) were Spencer Prescott, Gavin Bontrager, Rylan Kuhn and Riley Pierson. The ‘C’ team are scheduled to play again Tuesday against Plymouth.
Softball Clubs City
Wawasee kept the victory parade over Columbia City teams going Thursday with a 9-2 varsity softball win over the visiting Eagles.
Seven different Wawasee hitters had at least one hit, led by a two-run homer from Meghan Fretz, the first of her career. Paige Hlutke added two hits while Ale Brito had a hit, two walks and scored all three times she was on base. Brito was also credited with five stolen bases while Cristina DeLaFuente had four stolen bases and two runs scored. Alli Ousley added a double and scored a run.
Wawasee, which had committed 11 errors in its past two games, were flawless behind starter Amber Lemberg, who scattered six hits and walked four but struck out six in the complete game. Brook Sands took the loss for City, giving up five runs but none were earned.
Wawasee (3-1) will return to the field Friday night for a home contest with Manchester before a Saturday showdown with 1-A No. 10 Triton.
