Wawasee Sports Wrap – April 16
Wawasee tennis finally opened its season Wednesday afternoon after three weather scrubs. The drama was good on day one as Jada Antonides needed three sets to earn the third win of Wawasee’s 3-2 victory at Lakeland. The match was moved back from Monday’s weather postponement.
Antonides, playing at two singles, won game one 6-1 against Amanda Miller, but dropped the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). In the final game, Antonides held off Miller 6-4 to clinch the final court and the lid lifter for the Lady Warriors.
Singles play were on point for the Lady Warriors, with Katy Ashpole holding court against Carlee Richardson in a two and three final while Erin Wiktorowski won her first-ever high school match, beating Alondra Ballines two and one.
Lakeland won both doubles courts and needed to put in extra work to get those two victories. Kelsie Leggett and Blake Mullet needed three sets to finish off Aubrey Schmeltz and Jazlyn Gehlhausen 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at one doubles. The two doubles tandem of Becca Wooster and Cori Vaughn beat Ashley Larson and Natalie Fritz 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Wawasee picked up three JV wins Wednesday, with Jaclyn Miller taking Chloe Sirk 8-0 and Chelsea Carolus besting Hannah Gochenaul 8-2 in singles while the team of Paige Miller and Marte Tveraa beat Summer Poe and Cheyenne Bechtel 8-6.
Wawasee (1-0) will get back at it tomorrow when it hosts Goshen in both the home opener and the Northern Lakes Conference opener.
Defense Carries Warrior JV
A solid defensive effort along with timely execution helped Wawasee to a 10-6 junior varsity baseball win at Columbia City.
The Warriors used a two-run triple from Sam Rookstool and two hits from Brock Spangle to fuel the offense while Harrison Shortill had eight strikeouts on the hill.
Wawasee (1-0) will travel to East Noble this Friday.
