I just spent the last six hours outside working in the yard. What a beautiful day to be doing yard work. I am still not done with the project of raking and cleaning up after a long winter. To be honest, if I would have done a better job in fall I would have less to do now.
After being out in this weather and talking with friends who are doing similar things I started to think about ‘spring’ and how it is the greatest time for change. Because of the incredibly long and tough winter this is even more a thought on my mind. We have all experienced cabin fever. We have all been waiting impatiently to get outside and do just about anything.
As I was out I started to think about how spring, as a season, can affect our thoughts. These thoughts are not limited to just those special projects we need to do outside, but thoughts about change in our lives. Spring really does play a major role in how we look at our lives.
It is a proven fact that winter can have an adverse effect on our attitude. We can become grumpy, or at least feel the winter time blues so to speak. When there is limited sun and continually cold weather it really does make a difference in how we look at life.
Spring – sunshine and warm weather have the complete opposite effect on our attitudes. We go from the winter blues to almost a euphoric outlook on life. We smile more, we are more physically active and we spend more time with our friends and neighbors. We start to make many changes in our activities and habits now that spring is here. This leads to thoughts of what else in our lives can we change.
Aside from normal changes we make during spring what changes are on your mind? You may be thinking about changing the flower bed, the garden, or the driveway. However, what other changes are you thinking about? Are you thinking about a new job, career or business? Are you considering making new friends, or making your personal relationships more of a priority in your life? Are you considering making changes to your health, by diet and exercise?
This last winter was one of the hardest ones we had in decades. I heard so many people, including myself say, ‘When will this winter be over?!’ Many people were just muddling through, trying to deal with the elements. When this happens, it can be hard to consider changes we need in our lives – other than we need a snow blower! (We don’t have a snow blower, we have a ‘snow thrower’ – its name is Don!)
Spring, on the other hand, is a wonderful time to make some necessary changes. As I said earlier, we all seem to have a more positive attitude about life now that spring is here. When we have a better attitude about life it helps us make better choices and set better priorities. When I meet with clients I encourage them to not make major life decisions in a time of turmoil.
We all certainly need to make choices and possibly changes during rough times. The key is to try to limit the major choices and changes until your attitude about life is one of a positive nature. Since spring is here and you are most likely looking at life as the glass half full instead of half empty, what changes would you like to make? Now is a great time to spring into action!
