MARION – The Grace College baseball team split the season series with Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, ending with a loss and a win on the road.

After splitting a doubleheader Thursday in Westfield, the Lancers fell 14-3 in the opening game on Friday. Indiana Wesleyan produced at least three runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to propel the home team in front.

The Lancers (5-10; 4-3 Crossroads League) had a rally of its own in the second inning with three runs on two hits and two hit batsmen. Logan Grigsby laced a two-out, two-run triple to right field, and Joey Hickerson brought in Grigsby with a single on the next at-bat.

But Grace’s offense was lacking beyond the second inning as the Wildcats (6-16; 3-3 CL) outhit the Lancers 15-6. No player for Grace notched more than one hit in seven innings.

The second game started similarly as Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead. But Grace came roaring back with six runs in a wild second inning to take the lead for good. Paul Blankley and Jacob Bloom had RBI singles, and the Lancers’ five hits in the inning were aided by three Wildcat defensive errors to plate six runs.

Grace tacked on one more run in the fourth and two more in the sixth for insurance with the Lancers holding on for the 9-5 victory.

Austin Green went the distance from the mound, striking out five batters and allowing eight hits and five runs in seven innings of work.

Aaron Christenberry scored three runs on a 2-for-2 performance from the plate, and Bloom knocked in two runs. Tyler Weber finished 2-for-4, and CJ Swartz scored twice.

The Lancers’ next series is with Mt. Vernon Nazarene, playing the Cougars on the road Monday and at home in their Miller Field opener on Tuesday.
