Margaret Ann (Peg) Shaffer
Margaret Ann (Peg) Shaffer, 92, of Kaleva, Mich., Mexico Beach, Fla., and Akron, Ind., passed away at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, Ind., at 9:55 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1921 in Washington, D.C., to Joseph and Margaret (DeForge) Manilla. On Feb. 16, 1940, in Baltimore, Md., she married Carl Frederick Shaffer. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2006.
Peg lived an active and interesting life. In addition to her love for her family she was an avid walker and outdoors woman. She loved fishing, particularly trout fishing in Michigan and flounder fishing in Florida. Despite being a petite woman, she was a very good amateur horseshoe competitor, having won over 50 tournaments, often as mixed doubles with her husband Fred. Peg was a very good landscape artist, working primary in oils. Her work decorates the walls in the homes of her children and many of her friends. She also loved feeding the birds and working in her garden, her flowers were always the envy of the neighborhood. She has been often described by family and friends as kind, patient, caring and tough and having a never give up attitude.
She is survived by nine children: Charlie (Sharon) Shaffer, Kaleva; Joe (Barb) Shaffer, Helena, MT; Jim (and Maxine) Shaffer, Akron; John (Marlene) Shaffer, Winter Garden, Fla.; Nancy (Mike) Sabraski, Minn.; Janet (Gary) Schumaker, Aurora, Ill.; Cheri (Brian) Hirn, Saginaw, Mich.; Stephen (Debra) Shaffer, Warsaw, Ind.; and Cathy (Jim) Jacobsen, Ramsey, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Tom Shaffer.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held in April in Warsaw. McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw is handling the arrangements.
