Grace Routs Goshen With Strong Shooting
WINONA LAKE – The Grace Lancers won their sixth game in seven tries with an 82-59 drubbing of Goshen on Saturday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Grace led for all but 13 seconds in a dominant performance, lighting up Goshen’s zone defense with remarkable shooting. The Lancers (14-9; 6-6 Crossroads League) shot 56 percent for the game, featuring nine 3-pointers.
The Lancers took advantage of the Maple Leafs’ (4-19; 1-10) zone defense in the first period, blitzing it from the perimeter with seven treys before halftime. Brandon Vanderhegghen was the primary culprit with four 3’s in the opening half. Grace claimed a 40-22 lead at halftime.
Vanderhegghen, along with strong production from Kyle Fillman and Eric Miller, helped the Lancers’ bench outscore Goshen’s entire team before halftime (23-22). Goshen struggled offensively, making just six shots on 26 percent from the floor.
In the second half, Grace never led by fewer than 17 points in a confident display in front of a strong MOCC crowd.
The Lancers held a commanding 39-22 advantage in rebounding. Grace also assisted on 24 of their 31 made field goals.
Greg Miller took scoring honors, stuffing the stat sheet in the process. The All-American senior tallied 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals without committing a turnover. Vanderhegghen finished with 14 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Niko Read had 13 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds, Fillman just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards, and Logan Irwin added 10 points and seven assists.
The Lancers will travel to Spring Arbor, Mich., to take on the Cougars on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Grace will then host league-leading St. Francis on Saturday at 3 p.m. as part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader at the MOCC.
After the contest, Lancer basketball alumni celebrated 1,000 Lancer victories in a ceremony at center court. Special No. 1,000 Lancer jerseys were made for Grace President Dr. Bill Katip, Vice President Jim Swanson and head coach Jim Kessler, presented by Director of Athletics Chad Briscoe before the game. Lancer alumni present at the game gathered for a photo, prayer and time of fellowship after Grace’s win.
