Memorial Runs Past Lady Warriors
Wawasee’s girls basketball shooting woes continued Saturday in a 54-30 road loss to Elkhart Memorial.
Wawasee made just three shots from the floor in the first half and only one in the second quarter in what became the pivotal point of the contest. Memorial were able to spread out a 13-7 lead into a 24-9 cushion at the half as Wawasee scored just one basket in the second eight minutes.
Khadijah Moore paced Memorial (5-8, 2-2 NLC) with 20 points while teammates Kacey Jackson’s 13 points and Adrianna Jones’ 10 points helped the cause.
Wawasee (2-11, 1-3 NLC) had Aubrey Schmeltz take scoring honors with 11 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter but made just one field goal in the game. Erin Wiktorowski scored nine points in her season debut, hitting a trio of three-pointers. Wiktorowski missed the first 12 games of the season with a back injury.
Memorial also controlled the JV contest with Wawasee, winning 34-26. Statistics were not provided for the junior varsity contest.
Wawasee will travel to Whitko Tuesday for a non-conference matchup while Memorial hosts Bowman Academy, also Tuesday night.
Warriors End Boys Hoops Slide
Wawasee ended a four-game slide, picking up a 57-44 win at Elkhart Central Saturday in boys buckets.
Alex Clark paced the Warriors (2-9) with 17 points, Gage Reinhard tossed in 11 after scoring a career-high 28 points Friday night against Memorial, while Chase Myers and Sam Clark each added in nine points in victory.
Elkhart Central (4-7) used 12 points from Aaron Flax and nine points each from Treyton Harris and Clinton Parker.
The Warriors jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter in part to eight points from Myers and rode eight of Sam Clark’s nine points in the third quarter to maintain a nine-point edge heading into the final quarter.
Wawasee won by the slimmest of margins against the Blue Blazers in the JV game, taking the result 37-36. Statistics were not provided for the junior varsity contest.
Wawasee will next hit the road for a conference tilt with Plymouth Friday night while Central will visit McCuen Gym and the Concord Minutemen Tuesday night.
Warriors Pull Pair At Western
Wawasee added two team wins to its season docket Saturday at the Western Super 6 Duals wrestling tournament.
The Warriors defeated Pioneer 45-12 and Wabash 42-30 in team scoring, while losing to Winamac 49-24, Peru 76-0 and host Western 63-18.
Individual results were not made available by the Wawasee coaching staff.
Wawasee (4-21) will next suit up at the Northern Lakes Conference tournament this Saturday at Concord High School. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
