Cookbooks are being sold as a fundraiser for the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program at Wawasee High School.

The PBIS committee put together a cookbook with 335 recipes in seven categories from faculty and staff members. Culinary arts and basic skills classes also submitted recipes.

Cookbooks are $10 each and come with instructions to download the free e-book copy. All profits will be used to enhance the PBIS program at WHS.

PBIS is a school-wide discipline plan implemented to promote positive social behavior. At WHS, it is known as the “Warrior Way.” It incorporates the three Bs of be respectful, be responsible and be the difference.

Staff members have been trained to recognize and draw attention to respectful and responsible behavior by writing students a Warrior Way card. The PBIS team also holds reward parties for students throughout the school year recognizing positive student behaviors.

According to the national PBIS organization, research has shown the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. In the past, discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment based strategies including reprimands, expulsions, suspensions, loss of privileges and others.

Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding, according to the national organization. For more information, visit www.pbis.org.
