Pierceton Church Hosts Harvest Home Dinner
Pierceton Presbyterian Church will hold its 114th annual Harvest Home Dinner, with the traditional all-meat chicken pie, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 12. The church is located at 309 S. First St., (SR 13). Adult dinners will be $8, children $4 and seniors $5. Meals can be eaten in the handicap accessible fellowship hall or carry-out will also be available.
The first chicken pie dinner was held in 1897 and the second in 1900. At first, it was served only as a noon meal. One year there was such a small noon crowd it was decided to open for the evening. An anonymous young man changed the course of history by traveling all across town ringing a hand bell and shouting chicken pie was available for supper that night. Everything sold out and the tradition of serving two meals has continued to this day.
The chicken pies are made with only chicken and gravy, no fillers, in large deep dish pie pans. The people of the church make approximately 100 pies each year for the dinner. Each pie can serve 10 hungry people.
The church also has a gift shop with crafts and food items made by church members. The proceeds from these sales will go to the Presbyterian Women to use for missions.
