Special Olympians Compete In Indianapolis

Athletes from Kosciusko County participated in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Games in Flag Football, Corn Toss and Golf.

The Kosciusko County Panthers football team competed on Sunday, September 15 in the Flag Football tournament held in Indianapolis. The team placed fourth in their division in close games. The team players included: Tony Thompson, Matt Bammel, Amy Philson, Matt Baker, Scott Frush, Kevin McPeak and Anthony DeGaetano.

Local athletes also competed in the Corn Toss tournament held on Sunday, Sept. 15, in Indianapolis.  There were four teams in the tournament playing two games each in their respective divisions with the following placements:

  • Norman McPeak and Jerry Davis: First Place
  • Mary Kay Bess and Sandy Hunter: First Place; 
Wayne Momeyer and Ruby French: Fourth Place
  • Sandy Bibler and Becky Walls (Unified Partner):  Second Place

In golf, Kosciusko County had two unified teams that played in Kokomo on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the regional qualifying tournament held at Chippendale Golf Course. Joe Baranowski (Unified Partner) and Robert Svinarich placed sixth in the ‘H’ flight. John Bonitati (Unified Partner) and Matt Bammel placed fifth in the ‘A’ flight. Only the top three teams in each flight were eligible to advance to the state tournament.

Becky Walls, Kosciusko County coordinator for Special Olympics Indiana was very pleased with the hard work displayed by all the athletes, coaches and volunteers in these sports. League bowling has just started with the first day of practice that was held on Monday.
