Lois J. Weddle
Lois J. Weddle, 98, of Nappanee, Ind., died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at IU Health, Goshen, Ind.
She was born Sept. 22, 1915, in West Manchester, Ohio, to Clarence and Mary Richards Longanecker.
On June 1, 1940, she married James O. Weddle in West Manchester. He preceded in death Jan. 5, 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Weddle had lived in VanBuren, Ohio; Hartford City, Ind., and South Bend, Ind., before moving to Nappane in 1944.
Lois attended Manchester College and received her bachelor’s degree from Goshen College. She was a teacher in the Wa-Nee Schools. Lois taught fourth grade at West Side Park and then Kindergarten at South Side Elementary School. During WW II she had worked in accounting at Studebakers in South Bend.
Lois was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church, the Elkhart County Teachers Association, Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She also played with two bridge clubs in Nappanee and was a member of the Thursday Club. She was an avid IU fan.
Surviving are her children: Sheri and Rich Dodson, Nappanee; Randy and Carol (Hoffer) Weddle, Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers: Russell and Harold Longanecker; and sisters: Lora Collins, Treva Timmons and Ethel Fish.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Nappanee United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Davidson will officiate and burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.
