Wettschurack Leads Warsaw Win
WARSAW – A dominating sweep of the singles matches propelled the Warsaw boys tennis team to a convincing win Wednesday.
The host Tigers lost a total of just five games on the singles courts in blanking Huntington North 5-0.
Senior standout Kyle Wettschurack led the way for Warsaw as the Tigers improved to 2-0 with their second 5-0 win in two days. Wettschurack posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.
The Tigers also got lopsided straight set wins from both Sam Rice and Caleb Ray in singles play. Rice won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Ray prevailed 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
The duo of Nic Jansen and Will Petro led the way in doubles play for Warsaw. The No. 1 team posted a 6-2, 6-2 win. The Tigers completed the shutout as Nikos Schlitt and Christopher Herendeen won 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
The Tigers were once again without standout Evan Miller Wednesday. The senior, who also missed Tuesday’s season-opening win over Westview, is expected to be sidelined for possibly 2-3 weeks due to a knee injury. Miller, one of six seniors for the Tigers, went 20-2 at No. 2 singles in 2012 as coach Rick Orban’s team finished 12-3 and won conference and sectional championships.
Warsaw won the JV match 9-2. Singles winners for the Tigers were Justin Stout, David Homme, Tim Rata and Hudson Snyder. Winning in doubles play were the teams of Ryan Wettschurak and Cole Baker, Caleb DeBoest and Drew McCollom, Wesley Shuler and Chris Stichter, Keeton Bartel and Jean-Luc Baldwin and Evan Ousley and Hayden Steger.
Warsaw hosts Penn today (Aug. 22) at 4:30 p.m.
