A grant application on behalf of the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District was signed and readied for submission to Indiana’s Office of Community and Rural Affairs today. The Kosciusko County Commissioners are the governing body that must sign the application.

Due by the end of this month, the application will be considered by the IOCRA and a decision will be announced by the end of July.

If approved, the $30,000 grant will be used for water improvements in Enchanted Hills.
If the grant is awarded, $4,000 will come from Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District. A public hearing was held at a past commissioners meeting.

The project will affect 200 homes around the Enchanted Hills community, near Lake Wawasee, and where the water utility portion is located. The project will affect mainly drinking water.

Also at today’s meeting, the decision to take down a Yellow Creek Lake sign came before the commissioners. Dave Patterson said two years ago the sign was taken down by Indiana Department of Transportation.

The sign was located at SR 14 and South CR 600 West, near Silver Lake. “It’s a dangerous intersection,” said Patterson. The lake is also home to Camp Mollenhour and Patterson said the sign was important because it helped drivers find the camp.

Patterson was told the sign could be put back up by the nearby residents, who must pay for the sign. It would also need to be placed on private property, but not on the county right of way. A sign costs between $200 and $300, said Patterson, who noted he will look into options for putting the sign back up.

In other news, the board signed an emergency management ordinance. The ordinance outlines the limits and responsibilities of the commissioners and the emergency managment office during an emergency.

Required by the state, the ordinance puts the county in compliance. President Ron Truex will serve as chairman of the advisory council. A minimum of seven people are required to serve on the council; eight of the nine slots are filled.

In highway matters, an ordinance for a stop sign at a railroad crossing at CR 400 South, just east of SR 15, was approved.

Commissioners are president Ron Truex, Bob Conley and Brad Jackson. The next meeting will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 25. There will not be a meeting on July 2.
