While Warsaw Police and Kosciusko County Central Dispatch were attempting to discover why a train blocked nearly every crossing in the city of Warsaw, Mayor Joe Thallemer was on the phone with Norfolk-Southern.

The only crossing that was open to traffic was located at Anchorage Road.

The train, which had been stopped since approximately 1 p.m. caused congestion and traffic blockage throughout the city leaving many drivers frustrated.

Thallamer said a representative of the railroad reported a hydraulic hose at the back of the train had broken. The engineer had to walk the 1,600 foot train – approximately a 4 mile round-trip walk. According to a Warsaw Police officer, the Norfolk Southern train crew responsible for operating the train was spotted eating at a taco vendor near Central Park.

    What? They stopped for lunch?

I don’t see how a 1,600 foot train equates to a 4 mile round-trip walk. Even if you walked front-to-back-to-front, that’s still just 3,200 feet… just a bit more than a half a mile. How long will it be before enraged citizens begin parking junk cars on the rails in a tit-for-tat with Norfolk Southern? “But a belt broke when my car was on the tracks and it was a 10 mile round trip walk to the auto parts store 4 blocks away.”

Title should read: Train breaks down, and workers contribute to local economy! Thanks Norfolk Southern!

Not the first time a train has stopped to get some lunch…. A couple years ago a train was stopped across there too, found the guy in Penguin Point eating.

Warsaw should be considering a quality underpass like the fairly recent addition in Elkhart
    I loved McCall’s comment.
