Security at the Justice Building in Warsaw was recently evaluated and the report found mostly positive results. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Aaron Rovenstine gave the county commissioners the findings today.
Rovenstine said the evaluation was conducted along with the U.S. Marshal’s Office. The last evaluation was conducted over 10 years ago. The most recent main evaluation focused on security measures at the Justice Building.
The three-page report noted that some of the updated measures were doable while some are “beyond our capabilities,” explained Rovenstine. One of those suggestions mentioned upgrading the front entrance of the building, where security officers deal with in-coming traffic. “Other things are not as extensive, ” he noted.
The evaluation was conducted in February. The U.S. Marshal’s Office also recommended organizing a security committee, which Rovenstine will head.
“We are way ahead of the rest of the counties,” said Rovenstine. ”Overall, it was a good review.”
In other news, the emergency management department is seeking two grants. The first grant is for $21,428.57 and is for exercise and on-going training in the seven-county region of the district.
The second grant is for $39,026.50. The monies wiil go into the general fund as reimbursement for 50 percent of the department’s wages.
The county is also receiving money for the Tippecanoe River clean-up project. The DNR is giving $37,500 toward clean-up efforts in the river. A 20 percent match, or $7,500, will need to come from the county. The DNR is assisting the county with bids for the project so the total cost can be determined.
A state-wide tornado drill will take place tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and again between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The statewide drill is conducted in order for businesses and families to devise a plan in the event of a tornado.
In the event of severe weather, the drills will be rescheduled for Thursday at the same times.
A speed limit ordinance was approved for a portion of Old SR 15, just north of Milford. The speed limit will be reduced from 55 mph to 35 mph between 380 feet south of South Street and North Street.
The county’s health insurance policy is increasing by 2.3 percent, said county administrator Ron Robinson. There is a 5 percent reduction in overall savings because the county has its own medical clinic. There is a 7 percent reduction in worker’s compensation costs.
The renewal of the group medical plan was approved.
It was noted the county employee breakfast will be at 6 a.m. Friday, April 26, at the Justice Building.
The next meeting of the county commissioners is at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 9.
