Joseph Detweiler, 79, of Nappanee, Ind., and formerly of Bremen, Ind., passed away peacefully at Community Hospital of Bremen on Friday, March 15, 2013.
He was born on Dec. 7, 1933, in Chateau, Okla., to Levi and Lydia Ann (Hochstetler) Detweiler. On May 25, 1962, he married Rose Marie Schutz; she preceded him in death on July 12, 2008.
He moved to Indiana with his family at the age of 9 years old. Joe served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 on the USS Worchester and was honorably discharged.
Joe worked for Liberty Coach and owned and operated OK Body Shop in Nappanee, which became McCormicks Motors Body shop. Joe managed the shop until his retirement at the age of 71 in December of 2005.
He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and coaching Little League Baseball (Woodies) and the Bremen All Stars traveling league. Joe was an avid baseball, ultimate Cubs fan.
From his children, “He was a quiet, honest, hardworking man who never complained. He could not always give us what we ‘wanted,’ but always gave us what we ‘needed.’ Thank you! We love you!”
Survivors include one daughter: Robin (Scott) Hellman, Bremen; three sons: Joseph W. (Andria) Detweiler, Bremen; Jamie (Teri) Detweiler, Bremen; Paul A. Detweiler, Bremen; 10 grandchildren: Jessica Jones, Rebecca Quintanilla, Lance Hellman, Janae Detweiler, Josie Detweiler, Julie Detweiler, Jennifer Detweiler, Andrew Detweiler, Alissa Detweiler and Makali Detweiler; two sisters: Amanda Detweiler, Wakarusa, Ind.; and Barb (Wayne) Harter, Wakarusa; and a brother: Eli (Sue) Detweiler, Wakarusa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Rose; and a sister: Sylina Kauffman.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 19, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Bremen. Services will be held at noon Tuesday in the church. Father Bob Lengerich will officiate. Burial will take place at the Bremen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. Dominic’s Catholic Church.
