Pack 3731 Hosts Pinewood Derby
Members of the Cub Scout pack 3731 and their families gathered for the Cub Scout’s annual Pinewood Derby Friday night. The derby, which took place at the First Christian Church in Warsaw, featured 13 handcrafted pinewood cars from the the Tigers, Bears and Webelos.
The Cub Scouts created their own cars, carefully designing each for both style and functionality. Cars ranged from Titanic inspired vehicles to Tron “light racers.” The activity is meant to teach the young boys the value of sportsmanship while implementing aspects of creativity and learning such as physics and aerodynamics.
The Tiger Scout first-grade winners were: Christian Rains, first place; Charlie Sexton, second place; Dylan Van Ness, third place; and Corbin Johnston, fourth place.
The Bear Scouts third-grade winners were: Conner Strobel, first place; Andrew Frush, second place; Frankie Sexton, third place; and Joel Robertson, fourth place.
The Webelo Scout fourth- and fifth-grade winners were: Noah Travis, first place; Sean Stabler, second place; Emerson Wong, third place; Parker Kelly, fourth place; and Gerardo Marroquin, fifth place.
Best of show was awarded to Corbin Johnston.
The Boy Scouts of America is founded on the 12 principles of citizenship, compassion, cooperation, courage, faith, health and fitness, honesty, perseverance, positive attitude, resourcefulness, respect and responsibility. The group also encourages scouts to live by the motto of doing their personal best and helping others.
While the scouts do interact in several fun activities such as group camping and bowling, they are also expected to help members of the community. Scouts of the 3731 pack delivered hand made Christmas cards to local nursing homes this year to help spread Christmas cheer.
Though interested boys may join the Cub Scouts at any time in the year, the Cub Scouts will be hosting an official fall roundup for boys. The Cub Scouts will also be featuring a summer camp for the scouts to partake in, complete with scholarships to help with camping fees.
The charter fee for joining the Cub Scouts for a full year is set at $28. The fee includes membership costs and a full year of Boy’s Life Magazine for the scouts to receive.
