Murphy To Run At Vincennes
WARSAW – Warsaw Community High School standout Robert Murphy has run the streets of Warsaw for many years, and the senior found a path leading to Vincennes.
Murphy, coming off a tremendous cross country season and gearing up for this year’s track season, has signed a letter of intent to run both cross country and track at Vincennes University next school year.
Murphy played an instrumental role in Warsaw’s fourth-place finish at this year’s IHSAA Cross Country State Championships in Terre Haute, and the speedy senior will spend his collegiate days making trails about 50 miles to the south of the Laverne Gibson Cross Country course where he and his teammates turned in the best team performance in school history. Murphy’s 14th place finish at the state finals earned him All-State recognition. He was also an All Northern Lakes Conference selection as a senior, and he led the Tigers to the sectional and regional crowns and a runner-up finish at semistate under coach Jim Mills.
Murphy, as a junior in 2012, was a key figure in the WCHS track team’s strong performance during the regular season and post-season runs. The Tigers were undefeated in the Northern Lakes Conference and at the conference meet, and captured the sectional title before being nipped by a point in the regional for coach Matt Thacker’s squad. Murphy was the 3,200 meter champion at sectional and he took third in the NLC meet in both the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs.
Murphy, the son of Jeff and Lynn Murphy, plans on majoring in Multi Media Communications and participating in both cross country and track & field for coach Chris Gafner’s Trailblazers at Vincennes.
