Lancers Rally For Key Road Win
UPLAND, Ind. – A strong second half by the Grace College men’s basketball team produced a key come-from-behind 71-60 win at Taylor University on Tuesday night.
The 12th-ranked Lancers (13-4; 5-1 CL) held the Trojans to 30 percent shooting in the second half to erase a 10-point deficit in the Crossroads League contest.
With the win, Grace remains one game behind rival Bethel College in the league standings. The Lancers will have a chance to grab a share of first place when they host No. 21 Bethel on Thursday at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at 7 p.m.
In the first half on Tuesday, the Lancers scored the first nine points of the game to surprise the host Trojans (12-6; 4-2 CL).
Grace went scoreless for a six-minute stretch, however, to allow Taylor to claim a 27-19 lead late in the first half.
Grace was sloppy in possession of the basketball, committing eight of their 11 turnovers before halftime.
Bruce Grimm Jr., who was Grace’s main offensive force in the first half with 12 points, made a basket in the final seconds to pull the Lancers to within 32-28 at the break.
Greg Miller came up big in the second half for Grace. After tallying just three points in the first half, the reigning CL Player of the Week produced 13 points in the second half.
Taylor quickly asserted itself by grabbing a 10-point lead after halftime, but Grace turned the game on its head soon after with an outburst of their own.
The Lancers scored 16 unanswered points in a four-minute flurry to grab the lead for good.
The Trojans pulled to within two at 50-48 with 10:25 to play, but a free throw from Miller followed by a steal from Niko Read and quick pass to Grimm for a bucket gave Grace the breathing room it needed.
Grimm tied for scoring honors on the night with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Miller added another double-double to the year with 16 points on a trio of 3-pointers and 13 boards. He now has nine double-doubles to his credit this season.
Jared Treadway also recorded a double-double, the first of his career, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Karl Columbus was 4-of-7 from the floor for 10 points, and Elliot Smith chipped in with seven.
Overall, Grace held a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint. They also owned a plus-11 advantage in rebounding.
