Lines Unkind To Tigers In Loss
HUNTINGTON – A pair of lines, as in the free throw and the 3-point, were not kind to the Warsaw boys basketball team Saturday night.
Host Huntington North used an edge at both to defeat the Tigers 58-53 in a non-conference contest.
The host Vikings, who improved to 3-1 with their third straight win, hit 15-of-16 from the free throw line and 7-of-21 from beyond the 3-point line in the victory. Warsaw, conversely, was 10-of-14 from the foul line and 3-of-11 from behind the arc.
Warsaw, in losing its third straight game, was also done in by a rough third quarter. The Tigers, who led by as many as 11 points at 29-18 in the second period, were outscored 14-5 in the third stanza by the Vikings.
A cold-shooting second half was costly as Warsaw was outscored by the hosts 33-20 over the final 16 minutes. The Tigers, after shooting 14-of-24 from the field (including 2-of-3 on 3-pointers) in the first half, were just 6-of-24 in the final half (including 1-of-8 on 3-pointers).
The Tigers, who had beat Huntington North in their last five meetings, including a 69-45 final last season, was coming off a 75-62 road loss at Homestead Friday night. The Vikings, whose last win over Warsaw came during the 2005-06 season, beat Southwood 64-49 Friday night. North’s lone loss was a 48-42 setback at Homestead in their season opener.
Senior Jared Bloom led Warsaw with 17 points. Rashaan Jackson netted nine points, while Taylor Cone and John Swanson each had eight. Jordan Stookey, Warsaw’s second-leading scorer on the season, finished with just three points.
Warsaw, with an inexperienced team, has now lost to Columbia City, Homestead and Huntington North after opening the season with a home win over Tippecanoe Valley.
Noah Reed led the Vikings with a game-high 22 points, including hitting 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Kalvin Miller had 11 points for the winners.
Huntington North is coached by Rob Irwin, who spent the last seven seasons as the head coach at Whitko High School. Irwin, who guided the Wildcats to a 13-10 mark last season, is the third coach in the last three years for the Vikings. North went 5-19 last season.
Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally, the Warsaw junior varsity team lost 52-51 to Huntington North. Cameron Hoskins scored 12 points and Jake Mangas 10 for the JV Tigers, who outscored the hosts 17-5 in the final period.
Warsaw (1-3) hosts Rochester Friday night. Huntington North (3-1) plays at Fort Wayne Carroll Dec. 8.
