Eastlake Express Speed Team, a speed skate team out of the Eastlake Skating Center in Warsaw, recently competed in its second meet of the season and brought home some impressive honors.

The five-member team, ages 7 years old and up to 17, traveled to USA Skating Center in Mishawaka.

Kahreus Miller, the youngest at age 7, placed first overall in the primary division. For the senior division, Michael Hernandez placed second. In the freshmen division, Rhys Hill placed third and Taylor Cassel placed fifth. Ashton Smith placed third in the Junior division.

Eastlake Express belongs to the Grass Roots Speed League, a beginner introduction league to the Great Lakes Speed League, which is made up of teams from Wisconsin to Ohio. The league is transitional and prepares skaters for the higher leagues.

The Eastlake Express are coached by Jordan Hansen, who has been skating for 15 years with experience in speed skating, jam skating and coaching roller derby.

The team formed for a brief time three years ago. Now with five members and growing, the team has four meets left in the season.

Great job guys! It’s great to see each of you cheer on your team members every time you guys have practice or have a competition or even just at regular skate session. It’s good to see the team is growing. The team is always accepting new members. As a parent, I would love to see the team grow into what some of the other competitive teams have become. Contact Eastlake Skate Center if you would care to check out the team to see if it is something for you. I know these boys have lots of FUN.
