The driver involved in a car accident at U.S. 30 and CR 800 West near Atwood Friday afternoon was arrested, but why he left the scene is not known.

The crash happened in the westbound lane of U.S. 30 at 3:55 p.m. Witnesses told officers of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department that the driver of a grey Chevy Lumina, now identified as Kevin M. Zawadski, 37, of Elkhart, was northbound on 800 West and failed to yield to traffic on U.S. 30.

Zawadski’s car struck two vehicles on the highway, but he continued to drive northbound on 800 West. Kosciusko County Central Dispatchers received 911 calls that the grey car had extensive front end damage and its hood was nearly ready to come off the vehicle.

KCSD Deputy Shane Bucher and an Indiana State Police Trooper located the suspect vehicle crashed in a ditch near the Mount Tabor Church just minutes after the initial crash.

One female was injured in one of the vehicles hit on U.S. 30 but refused treatment at the scene. Names of the two drivers involved were not yet available this evening.

Zawadski was preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. His bond was set at $305.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by Multi-Township EMS, Etna Green and Atwood fire departments and Indiana State Police.
