Syracuse Public Library News
The Syracuse-Wawasee Digital Archives is a free, searchable online database of Syracuse-area history that includes thousands of historical photographs, maps, items from Syracuse’s history and more. New material from the historical collections of the library and museum, and historical items from private collections, are being added all the time by project assistant Jude Strieby-Raska, a Syracuse native and a recent graduate of IPFW.
This is a wonderful new way to research town history, genealogy, history of hotels and businesses (some of which are long gone), as well as peeking into historic collections that are not usually available for public viewing.
The database is intuitive and easy to use, and you can use search terms to narrow results down to exactly what you’re looking for. The database is to be included in Indiana Memory, a digital initiative through the Indiana State Library that allows public institutions across the state to have their online collections available through one portal.
If you have a collection of material related to this history of Syracuse and Lake Wawasee and would like to have electronic copies of your collection included in the database, please call the library at 574-457-3022 – digitizing can be done in private homes so material never need leave its owner’s possession. The link to the Syracuse-Wawasee Digital Archives is on the library’s homepage at www.syracuse.lib.in.us.
